Repair or Replace? How to Decide on Your HVAC System

When a system fails, the honest question is rarely "can it be fixed?" — almost anything can. The real question is whether fixing it is the smart use of your money. Here's the framework we use, and the same one behind the second opinions our customers thank us for.

Five things worth weighing

• Age: most systems are designed for a 12–15 year life in our climate. A repair on a young system is usually worth it; on an aging one, it can be throwing good money after bad.
• Repair cost vs. value: a large repair on an old, inefficient unit often makes replacement the better long-term call.
• Refrigerant type: older units using phased-out refrigerant get more expensive to service over time.
• Efficiency & comfort: if your bills are climbing and rooms never feel right, a properly sized new system can pay back part of its cost in lower operating cost.
• Repair history: a unit that's needed several fixes in a couple of seasons is telling you something.

When repair is the right answer

A newer system with a single failed part, a clear cause, and no history of problems is usually worth repairing. We'd rather make an honest repair than sell you a system you don't need — there are real reviews from neighbors whose units we fixed after another company told them to replace.

When replacement makes more sense

If the unit is near the end of its life, the repair is major, and efficiency is poor, a planned replacement (or a new heating system) on a correct load calculation is the better investment — and far less stressful than an emergency failure in July.
