Why One Room Is Always Hot (and How to Actually Fix It)
An upstairs bedroom, a bonus room over the garage, or a sunroom that never cools isn't a thermostat problem — it's an airflow, duct, or zoning problem. Here's how to diagnose which one.

Almost every Central Louisiana home has one: the upstairs bedroom that never sleeps cool, the bonus room over the garage nobody uses in July, the sunroom that's beautiful for three months a year. Lowering the thermostat punishes the whole house to fix one room — and usually still doesn't fix it. The real cause is one of four things.
Cause 1: The duct run can't deliver the air
Rooms farthest from the air handler often sit at the end of long, undersized, or kinked duct runs. By the time air arrives, there isn't enough of it. Signs: weak airflow at the register even with the fan on high. The fix is a duct evaluation — sometimes a damper adjustment or a resized run solves it outright.
Cause 2: The room's heat load is simply higher
Bonus rooms over garages sit on an unconditioned space and under a hot roof; sunrooms are mostly glass; west-facing bedrooms bake all afternoon. These rooms need more cooling per square foot than the rest of the house, and a system balanced for the average room will always leave them behind.
Cause 3: Attic heat is winning
In a 130° Louisiana attic, thin insulation and leaky ceiling penetrations let heat pour in faster than the AC can remove it. Duct runs through that attic lose cooling on the way, making it worse.
Cause 4: One thermostat is running the whole show
A single thermostat in the downstairs hallway shuts the system off when the hallway is comfortable — not when the upstairs is. That's a control problem, not an equipment problem.
The fixes that actually work
- Duct repair or rebalancing — the cheapest fix when delivery is the problem.
